Lending a Helping Hand

To do their part, a group of Roanoke Elementary School students spent Sept. 9 washing cars in an effort to garner funds to help a Houston school damaged during Hurricane Harvey.

The PTA-sponsored fundraiser, held at Roanoke Elementary, resulted in the collection of more than $500. All of the proceeds will be used to purchase school supplies for Ripley House Charter School in Houston. The school was selected after Roanoke fourth-grade teacher Jackie Adla mentioned that her cousin, Bethany Sullivan, works as a resource room teacher in the now-damaged charter school.

The Riverhead Central School District students plan to hold additional fundraisers in the future to assist the Texas school.

Harborfields swimmers support the fight against cancer

September 13, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

At the end of August, the Harborfields Central School District’s girls’ varsity swim team participated in an annual fundraiser to help raise money and awareness for cancer research through the Swim Across America organization — this year joined by Smithtown’s varsity girls team. Together, more than 40 swimmers raised $4,000 for the cause, and both teams committed to the event again next year.

Swimmers were thanked and congratulated by Suffolk Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D.

“Your commitment and support will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer,” Spencer said.

In addition to the swim itself, a scientist from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory attended the event and spoke with the participating swimmers to explain the importance of continuous support and research for cancer. Students were thankful to be able to help such an important cause.

Ward Melville High School senior honored for volunteerism

Ward Melville High School senior Madeline Mastriano was selected as the only female student recipient of the Junior Angel Award during this September’s second annual Angel Awards.

Madeline was honored for her efforts in co-chairing the Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand that she created five years ago with her brother Joseph, a freshman at Murphy. Through this effort, the students helped to rally their peers from throughout the district and members of the community to raise $20,000 at the lemonade stand this summer. To date, the teen siblings have helped raise more than $36,000 for the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

The Angel Awards are given to outstanding women in the community who are recognized for their charity work and who combine work, home life and volunteering. The ceremony serves as an opportunity for people to meet these incredibly talented and giving women and at the same time, be in attendance as the community thanks them for their tireless efforts on behalf of others.
